 At 04:20 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 411 N 51st Ave W. Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the front of the house. Fire had originated in the basement, and extended up to the attic.

The occupant of the home woke to the smell of smoke. He found fire coming from the furnace, and tried to shut it down. Occupant had retrieved his cat, but delayed calling the Fire Department.

The cause of the fire was determined as furnace related by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office.

Structure and contents are a total loss. Damage is estimated in excess of $100,000 . Tenant is unable to return to house. He is currently residing with the homeowner.

21 firefighters from Spirit Valley, Lincoln Park, and downtown responded to this incident.
