INCIDENT TIME: 8:05 p.m.
INCIDENT LOCATION: 511 N 57th Ave W
At 8:05 p.m.on the evening of October 26, 2013, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 511 N. 57th Ave W. Crews arrived at an up and down duplex to find smoke and fire coming from the front exterior and interior wall of the home on both the first and second floor. Crews opened up the wall on both levels and extinguished a fire in the wall cavity. FIre damage was limited to this wall cavity in both apartments. These was minor smoke damage in each unit.
Fire investigators were called to the scene.The investigation is on going. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
While the fire was quickly extinguished, crews remained on the scene for 2 1/2 hours checking for fire extension, overhauling the damaged area, and assisting fire investigators.
Damage is estimated at $25,000.00 to the structure and $5,000.00 to the contents.
An occupant of the lower unit saw smoke in the front entry way coming from the wall and called 911. Occupants of the lower apartment were being assisted by the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross. Occupants of the upper unit were not at home when the fire was discovered. This building will not be habitable before repair.
Firefighters from Gary, West Duluth, Lincoln Park, and Downtown stations responded to fight this fire.
There were no injuries.
