NATURE OF INCIDENT: Vehicle Day
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 6/13/2013
INCIDENT TIME: 10:00 am
INCIDENT LOCATION:

Unattended cooking, including grease fires is the number one cause of home fires in Minnesota. Many people die or are injured in these fires each year.

Through a grant from a fire prevention grant from FEMA the Duluth Fire Department purchased a kitchen fire safety trailer. The trailer is a portable classroom with a working stovetop for live demonstrations.  A team of trained firefighters teaches the public about fire safety in the kitchen. Once the crowd sees how to put out a grease fire safely, they are shown what happens when water is poured into the burning pan of grease. As the waters hits the hot grease, the grease explodes and flames spread across the ceiling and out of the trailer. Citizens are left with a lasting impression. The team will educate the public on the myths of extinguishing grease fires, such as flour or salt and demonstrate the simple act of sliding a lid over the burning grease and turning off the stove can extinguish the fire.

The trailer will go into service for the first time at the Mill Hill Mall Transportation Day June 13, 2013 from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. the first live demonstration will be at 10:15 a.m. in parking lot outside Cold Water Creek and JCPenney.
