NATURE OF INCIDENT: Woodland House Fire
CASE NO.: 09-008200
INCIDENT DATE: 10/31/2009
INCIDENT TIME: 1019
INCIDENT LOCATION: 122 W. Austin St.
The Duluth Fire Department responded to check an electrical problem at 122 W. Austin Street this morning at 1019 hours. Upon arrival of the initial engine company, light smoke was noted coming from the attic. The resident of the house was quickly evacuated and the alarm was upgraded to a full response.
Crews found a large, smoldering fire in the attic of the single story structure. The interior ceiling of the living room was removed and the fire was quickly extinguished. Fire crews spent significant time removing smoldering cellulose insulation from the attic area, all while protecting the contents of the living area below.
With the quick response and aggressive action, this fire was stopped before it progressed beyond the attic area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal's Office, and initial damage estimates are at $25,000.
