Volunteers Needed on Saturday, November 17th to Construct Gravel Walking Trail to Lincoln Park Middle School: New Trail Will Provide Safe Walking Route for Students
(Duluth, MN) Volunteers are needed to help build a gravel walking trail that will connect Devonshire Street with the newly constructed school district walkway between Lincoln Park Middle School and the neighborhood. The event will take place on Saturday, November 17th from 9am – 12pm. Volunteers will clear brush, build a small retaining wall and move gravel onto the pathway.
“This trail project is an exciting continuation of our efforts to ensure that students have safe pedestrian walkways and bike pathways to their schools,” states James Gittemeier, Senior Planner with the Duluth-Superior Metropolitan Interstate Council (MIC).
MIC, the Healthy Duluth Area Coalition and the St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services – Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) are leading the “Safe Routes to School” initiative in Duluth. “It is great when the community comes together to develop these routes,” continues Gittemeier.
“The City is a proud partner in creating this continuation of the Lincoln Park Middle School walkway with Devonshire,” explains Judy Gibbs, Trails Coordinator with the City of Duluth. “With the help of volunteers, we’ll be able make sure that students have a safe and efficient way to get to school on foot.”
This is an all ages, no experience necessary event. Individuals, families and community groups are encouraged to participate. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather. All equipment will be provided. Youth under 18 will need guardian permission. Meet up location is at the junction of the 3200 W block of Devonshire and Atlantic Avenue (see map at http://goo.gl/maps/15qIu).
Volunteers are asked to please register prior to event atcskafte@duluthmn.gov or 218-730-4334.
