Flood Recovery Work to Temporarily Close Amity Creek Trail
Flood Recovery efforts will begin Wednesday, October 17th on the Amity Creek Trail temporarily closing its use to the public. The section of trail impacted by the Flood Recovery efforts is the eastern portion of the snowmobile trail between Jean Duluth Road and Seven Bridges Road alongside the Amity Creek. public.
Thanks to grant from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), about 10 culverts along Amity Creek Trail will be fixed and or replaced by the South St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District in an effort to protect and improve the water quality of Amity Creek. The culverts being replaced are either causing erosion, causing water to become backed up along the trail, or were damaged during the flooding in June. Fixing these culverts is one of four components of this grant aimed at protecting water quality in Amity Creek. The other three components are:
1.) Tree planting: about 150 trees were planted by the Duluth Stream Corps in the upper watershed this past spring.
2.) Gully stabilization: 1 large gully will be stabilized next summer, reducing the amount of sediment entering the stream
3.) Eroding bank stabilization: 1 eroded bank will be stabilized on the creek, also to reduce the amount of sediment entering the stream - this work will likely occur in the spring of 2014. The bank stabilization will also likely require Amity Creek Trail to be closed for a brief period of time. The trail will be closed temporarily for this project. The trail closing will be on Amity Creek Trail - the work will occur between the trailhead at Skyline (Start) and Snively’s intersection with the powerline trail (End).
