SUBJECT: Woodland Ave Garage Fire
BY: Asst Chief Richard Mattson

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Garage Fire
CASE NO.: 09007721
INCIDENT DATE: 10/14/2009
INCIDENT TIME: 8:14 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 4828 Woodland Ave, Duluth, MN

At 8:14 PM on Wednesday, October 14th, Duluth Firefighters responded to a 911 call for a garage fire at 4828 Woodland Ave.  Initial arriving crews reported a fully involved large detached garage with flames reaching high above the buildings roof..  It was determined that the nearest fire hydrant was approximately ½ mile from the fire location, so a mutual aid request was made through 911 for Rice Lake Fire Department to provide a reliable water supply.

The main body of the fire was knocked down with tank water from the first arriving Duluth Fire Dept Engine Company.  The fire was then held in check with water from other arriving Duluth Fire rigs until Rice Lake Township Tanker Trucks and Engines were able to set up a water supply operation.

The two departments worked well together and were able to save a majority of the contents inside of the garage and workshop areas.  The detached garage received heavy damage to the rear of the building and to the roof trusses and decking.  All of the contents inside of an open lean-to on the back of the garage were destroyed.  Damage estimates are $40,000 for the building, $10,000 for the contents, and $3000 for a vehicle parked near the garage.

A total of 25 firefighters from the two adjoining cities were involved in the firefighting effort. There were no civilians or firefighters injured during the incident.  The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office and is undetermined at this time.
