INCIDENT TIME: 20:00
INCIDENT LOCATION: 109 N. 2nd Ave. E.
At 20:00 this evening, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Kozy Apartment Building at 109 N. 2nd Ave. East.
Firefighters arrived on the scene within 90 seconds of receiving the alarm and found heavy fire in the basement laundry of what is known as the annex portion of the apartment building. Crews were able to contain the fire to the large basement area quickly, but were on the scene approximately two hours ventilating and overhauling the room of fire origin.
The entire building was searched for occupants, but no one was found inside the building. No injuries were reported during this incident.
Firefighters were forced to take extra precautions operating in this building due to previous fires coupled with unknown structural conditions. Firefighters from Downtown, UMD and Lincoln Park responded to the alarm.
The Duluth Fire Marshal's office is investigating as to the origin and cause of the fire. The Duluth Police Department was on the scene and provided assistance with crowd and traffic control.
Damages are estimated at $50,000.
