SUBJECT: Garage House Fire 27th W
BY: Assistant Fire Chief Richard Mattson
NATURE OF INCIDENT: House Fire
CASE NO.: 11007351
INCIDENT DATE: 10/15/2011
INCIDENT TIME: 10:33 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1118 N 27th Ave W
At 10:33 PM last evening the Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 1118 N 27th Ave W. Dispatch advised that the fire was in a garage and was fully involved. All residents had been evacuated from the buildings. Eight fire apparatus and 21 firefighters responded to fight the fire.
Upon arrival firefighters found that the garage was actually attached to the house and was fully involved. The fire was also burning the house under the eves. Before lines could be laid the fire advanced into the attic of the two story home. Firefighters knocked down the garage fire with hose streams and then proceeded into the home to the second floor to extinguish the attic fire. The fire had grown so large in the attic that the windows of the attic had to be broken from the outside to let the smoke and heat escape before firefighters could attempt entry to the fire area. They then directed a hose stream into the attic and knocked down the heavy fire. During the search of the residence one cat was located and rescued from the building. A second cat was not located and may have escaped on its own.
The fire completely destroyed the two car attached garage and caused moderate to heavy smoke damage to the first and second floor of the home. The attic area was heavily charred by the flames and there were two small holes burned through the roof. All contents of the garage were destroyed and much of the contents of the house was either burned or smoke damaged. There was also a Chev Suburban and a Kia Rio that were burned in the fire. Damage estimate for the building is $150,000 and damage to contents is $75,000.
A fire investigator was called to the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire, which remains undetermined at this time. No firefighter or civilian injuries occurred during the fire. The home will require extensive repairs before the homeowner will be able to move back in. Red Cross assisted with providing temporary housing for the displaced family.
