SUBJECT: Woman Rescued From Lake Superior Park Point
BY: Asst Chief Richard Mattson

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Water Emergency
CASE NO.: 11005285
INCIDENT DATE: 8/3/2011
INCIDENT TIME: 4:54PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: Park Point Lake Side Past Airport

At 4:54 PM today Duluth Fire Dept was dispatched to a woman in the water suffering from a water skiing injury to her leg.  She was located on the Lake Superior side of Park Point past the beach house.

Upon arrival firefighters determined that the accident was actually out past the airport on the lake side.  Firefighters used small trucks to get out to the end of the sand road and access the beach and the patient.  Duluth Police also responded to the scene by using their ATV stored on Park Point for use in just such emergencies.  She was still in the water and in great pain but was near the shore allowing quick access.  She was transferred from the water to a litter and then transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

This patient was a visitor to our area from California.  Thankfully, her injuries are not life threatening.  Local residents take for granted that they have quick access to emergency medical care when within the City of Duluth.  But this area is one of many spots inside city limits where emergency response takes longer than normal.  When enjoying these types of areas, be sure you know where you are at all times and be prepared to give directions to emergency responders when you make a cell phone call.  This will insure, as happened in this case, that help will be able to get to you as quickly as possible.
