SUBJECT: Young Boy Water Rescue
BY: Asst Chief Richard Mattson

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Medical Response
CASE NO.: 11005281
INCIDENT DATE: 8/3/2011
INCIDENT TIME: 1:30 PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2502 London Road

On Wednesday afternoon the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a boy pulled from the waters of Lake Superior.  He had been playing with friends along the shore and apparently fell or jumped into the water and hit his head on a rock.  He had already been pulled from the water but was not breathing and rescue breathing was in progress.

When fire crews arrived the boy was breathing and had a pulse although he was still not conscious. The boy was in the water for less than a minute according to bystanders.  He was backboarded, placed in a Stokes basket and a low angle rope rescue system was established to bring the patient up the steep rocky bank.  He was transferred via ambulance to a local hospital where his condition is unknown.

The shoreline of Lake Superior can be a fun place to swim or a dangerous one.  And to make matters worse, these two types of swimming areas can be within feet of each other on the varied terrain of this areas shoreline.  Choose an area that is safe for the swimmers experience level.  Keep your eye on young children at all times as they do not always heed their parents advice, possibly sneaking to a nearby point of rocksto find adventure.  Be aware of the possibility of unknown hazards beneath the water surface.
