BY: Assistant Chief's Office

NATURE OF INCIDENT: House Fire at 2422 Harvey Street
CASE NO.: 11-004253
INCIDENT DATE: 6/28/2011
INCIDENT TIME: 23:35
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2422 Harvey Street

The Duluth Fire Department responded to report of a house fire last night at 2422 Harvey Street in the PIedmont neighborhood.

Upon arrival, firefighters found and quickly extinguished a room and contents fire in the single family dwelling. Initial damage estimates are set at $40,000.

There were no injuries reported; however credit is given to working smoke alarms in the home which woke the occupant and afforded him the time to evacuate his family and pets.

The investigation into the origin and cause of this fire has been completed. The fire began in a bedroom of the home, and was caused by unattended burning candles.

The Duluth Fire Department would like to remind the public that the use of candles is a significant hazard, and should never be left unattended. Candles are a leading cause of accidental fires in the home, and often times can lead to injury or death for the occupants. This incident would likely have had a very different outcome if not for the presence of working smoke alarms.

Please contact the Duluth Fire Marshal's office for further information at 218-730-4999.
