Michigan Street Utilities Upgrade project resumes July 18

 

[Duluth, MN] - Michigan Street in downtown Duluth has undergone a significant utilities upgrade project since April involving electrical, gas, water and steam lines. This complex project has been progressing well with no delays and has finished the first two phases that resulted in a temporary full re-opening of Michigan Street between July 1 and 17.  Three additional phases are planned starting on July 18.


Currently, Michigan Street at 3rd Ave West is fully open to traffic and the Duluth Transit Authority buses have resumed regular operations from the Duluth Transit Center. This intersection will be an important access point as this project moves into the 3rd phase.

 

Phase 3 impacts Michigan Street from the Medical Arts Building (312 West Michigan Street) to Republic Bank (415 West Michigan Street), which will be closed off starting at about 6:00 AM July 18 and remain closed until Labor Day weekend. The 4th Ave West intersection will be closed for the first 4-5 weeks but traffic will have access to Republic Bank and the Ordean Building via 5th Ave West.

 

Access to the 300 block of businesses will be available from the opposite direction via 3rd Ave West which will be signed for two-way traffic. The 4th Ave West parking ramp will be accessible from the lower part of 4th Ave West using the Depot Road (below Michigan Street). Please remember to drive slowly and use caution in the work zone.

 

Phase 3 Project Time frame: July 18 until Labor Day weekend

 

Parking is available and accessible in multiple lots and ramps near Michigan Street or visit duluthparking.com: 

  • Medical Arts Parking Ramp – access from 3rd Ave West or frontage Road
  • DTA – access from 3rd Ave West only
  • 410 Parking Ramp (connected to maurices Headquarters) – access from West First Street or Alley off 5th Ave West headed north
  • 4th Ave West Parking Ramp – enter from frontage road below Michigan St. which is accessible by following 3rd Ave West and exit from 5th Ave West and Michigan St.
  • Library/Depot lot – 6th Ave West and West Michigan St.

Additional public notices will be issued as updates arise and the project moves into its final two phases.
