Catalytic Converter Initiative

Catalytic Converters are being stolen due to their high-value precious metals. STATISTICS. To help deteriorate thieves from stealing converters, the Duluth Police Department, 4th Street Auto, Thompson's T-Express, and Allstar Service Center, are partnering together to ID your catalytic converter.

“The goal is that once a thief notices that your catalytic converter is marked, they won’t steal it,” said Ben Nordskog, Auto Theft Investigator. “If the thief does steal it, this identification mark allows us to link the ID number with the car's VIN number, letting us track the converter.”

While your vehicle is being serviced at either 4th Street Auto, Thompson's T-Express, or Allstar Service Center, you just need to ask the employees there to mark your catalytic converter. This is a free service that won't damage your vehicle.

The Duluth Police Department’s Catalytic Converter Initiative is a grant-funded program. The initiative hopes to be a continuous program to help prevent catalytic converter thefts within the City of Duluth. This website is the best way to stay updated on the initiative.

About CATETCH:

Two ultra-destruct labels, laser cut with a unique code and the URL of a secure, accredited database - the International Security Register (ISR) – are applied to a CAT and will break into pieces if an attempt is made to remove them. In addition, a fluid that etches into metal is applied to the labels so that even if they are removed, the code and URL will remain clearly readable.

A thief stealing a marked and registered CAT will run a real risk of being caught if an officer of the law or a potential purchaser checks the status, by accessing the database and entering the unique code.

It is easy to install in minutes to a clean and dry catalytic converter – peel and stick the label onto your catalytic converter, rub the provided compound on the label and register your label using the QR code.
