Eligibility

To become a Duluth Police Officer, you have to have all of the below qualifications. 

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Current licensed police officer with Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board or eligible for licensing

Hiring Process

Duluth Police Department's Academy

After receiving an offer to become an officer, the Duluth Police Department puts each employee through our academy. There are more than 380 training hours in the academy that cover a variety of topics. Topics include the following list here

After completion of DPD’s Academy, you’ll be in the Field Training Officer program. 

Field Training Officer Program

Upon completion of the Duluth Police Department’s Academy, probationary officers will start the Field Training Officer Program. The Duluth Police Department’s FTO program puts you in real-life policing scenarios. You’ll be paired with a field training officer who’ll be with you for 16 weeks, spending four weeks in each phase of the four phase program. FTO gives you experience before you start solo patrol. During solo patrol, you’ll be on probationary status for a year.

  • Year 1 base pay: $31.22/hour - $5,411/month
  • Year 2 base pay: $33.77/hour - $5,853/month
  • Year 3 base pay: $38.38/hour - $6,652/month

    • 4% longevity steps at 7 and 14 years
