Western Waterfront Trail Renewal Project Starts September 19
a St. Louis River Corridor Initiative
[Duluth, MN] – The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation division is informing the public about the scheduled renewal and restoration of the Western Waterfront Trail between the Irving and Riverside neighborhoods. The project will restore the trail to its original width of 8 feet with a one foot shoulder and improve accessibility for all users.
Invasive plant removal took place in the spring to clear trail access. The scope of the renewal project includes the reestablishment of the original trail width, including replacing and re-grading the gravel trail tread. In addition, crews will repair and improve stormwater infrastructure including culvert replacement and restoring stormwater drainage as well as resurface boardwalks and bridges with new rot-resistant timbers. New native vegetation will be established to stabilize failing banks. New trail upgrades will enable universal access upgrades to the trail for individuals with mobility impairments.
The project could take up to 6 weeks to complete. Crews will work from 7 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Trail users should be mindful of crews and equipment on the trail.
The project is part of the St. Louis River Corridor Initiative and was made possible by a NOAA Coastal Grant of $100,000. The Trail project details are available at http://www.duluthmn.gov/st-louis-river-corridor/western-waterfront-renewal-restoration/
