Project Status: Design
Project Background: The 2011 Duluth Trail and Bikeway Master Plan outlines building on existing and planned trails to connect the trail system and provide trails in underserved areas or to provide trails for specific recreational uses. Connector trails that traverse the slope to connect the ridge top neighborhoods and trails with the river basin neighborhoods were specifically cited as critical needs during the Master Planning process.

Project Overview: The Clyde Connector is designed to provide a high quality trail experience for multiple users over its entire length. It will be a consistent 10’ wide firm and stable “natural surface” trail with switch backs climbing the ridge to connect the Munger StateTrail at the bottom with the Skyline Parkway at the top. This design accommodates snowmobiles to create a critical connection between Munger and Skyline, both of which are key routes for this user group. The trail will also accommodate winter hikers, skiers, runners and fat tire bicycles. Winter users can connect with the ski trails to the west of Skyline. Between Munger and Skyline, the Connector provides users with access to the Superior Hiking Trail and the proposed DWP multiuse trail that in turn connects Spirit Mountain Recreation Area with Stewart Creek.
Non-winter users, hikers, bicyclists, walkers and equestrians, will use the Connector in much the same way, accessing increased opportunities to access the Munger, Skyline, Superior Hiking Trail and the proposed DWP where appropriate. Additionally, the Connector will provide connectivity from Skyline, Munger, Superior Hiking and DWP trails to Munger Landing, a state water access point.
Project Partners: Over the Hill Night Riders Snowmobile Club, Duluth Area Horse Trail Alliance, Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores, the Superior Hiking Trail Association, Duluth Cross Country Ski Club, Northern Minnesota Track Club
