Duluth Police Explorer Post #244 was given the number 244 to honor fallen officer Gary Wilson who paid the ultimate sacrifice on April 10, 1990. Gary Wilson proudly held badge #244 when he was killed in the line of duty.

Goals of the Duluth Explorer program are to:

  1. Help young adults gain practical knowledge and experience in the career of Law Enforcement.
  2. Engage in program activities to encourage personal development.
  3. Experience positive leadership from adult and youth leaders and be given opportunities to take on leadership roles.
  4. Have a chance to learn and grow in a supportive and caring environment.

Interested individuals must go through a written application, followed by an interview with an interviewing committee, which is made up of the officers of the post and two or three of the advisors. A background investigation is also done to help with the selection of new explorers.

Explorer meetings are held Sunday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the Duluth Police Department training room at 2030 N. Arlington Avenue.

Explorers will have opportunities to volunteer at various community events, fundraise with different law enforcement and non-law enforcement organizations, and have fun with fellow explorers at various off-duty gatherings.

Ride Along:
Duluth Police Explorers have the opportunity to ride along with Police Officers. Some of the criteria to ride along are that the explorer be in attendance at the meeting the week of the ride along request, and have completed our minimum requirements. Some of the requirements are to be first aid and CPR certified and experienced radio communications training. An explorer must also be 16 years of age.

Duluth Police Explorers Compete in two competitions yearly to provide an opportunity to exercise their knowledge and training attained throughout the year and to experience teamwork and leadership first hand.
