The City of Duluth, in partnership with a group of volunteer committee members, issued a Request for Qualifications in October to identify artists interested in working on development of a memorial that reflects the history of ski jumping at Chester Park.  From the submissions, two artists have been selected to develop proposals for consideration.

While multiple ideas for memorialization - including development of oral histories and establishment of an archive/library of photos, news articles and other items - have been discussed and may be undertaken at a later date, we are currently seeking input specific to creation of a physical memorial or structure that will be placed in the Park.

Request for Assistance

To support the artists in development of their concepts, the City of Duluth is seeking input from park users, former ski jumpers and the broader community regarding their vision for a physical memorial (structure/monument) that characterizes/represents the history of ski jumping at Chester Park.

Input received through online submissions will be shared with the artists selected to develop concepts for the memorial.  Final concepts will be presented to the Memorialization Committee in early 2015, with selection shortly thereafter.  Installation of the memorial is planned for mid to late summer once fundraising goals have been met.

Important to note:

  • Placement of the memorial will be outdoors at Chester Park near the playground.  Those viewing the structure from this area will be able to see the former ski jump location in the background when looking up toward the hill
  • Total project budget is $15,000
  • Input from the community will be received at a public meeting on December 17, 2014 at 6:00 PM at the Central Hillside Community Center (12 W 4th Street) and through online submissions below.
