Fire Department

Fire Investigation Services

The Duluth Fire Department investigates the origin and cause of every fire that they respond to. The Duluth Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for the investigation of any fire with significant loss, fires involving a fatality or injury, fires involving juveniles, as well as any fire that has been intentionally set.

The Duluth Fire Department and Duluth Police Department have established a fire investigation task force. The objectives of that task force are to jointly investigate incendiary fires, develop an origin and cause hypothesis, and prosecute the responsible party in cooperation with the St. Louis County Attorneys Office.

Arson is a difficult crime to solve based on condition of evidence after a fire. It's only with a strong commitment to training coupled with a commitment to interagency cooperation that this task force continues to be successful. The Duluth Department also thoroughly investigates fires that are accidental in nature. The reason for identifying the source of accidental fires is to prevent similar fires in the future. Data compiled by the Department is shared with state agencies in hopes of identify similar trends in fires that can be resolved through education, control, and even product recall. A good place to check on fire related product recalls is the Consumer Product Safety Commission,

To provide a arson tip, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-974-TIPS(8477) or 723-ENUF(3683), the State Arson Hotline 1-800-723-2020, or the Fire Marshals Office at 218-730-4397.
