Board and Commission Vacancies

Duluth residents are encouraged to submit an application to be considered to serve on City of Duluth boards and commissions which currently, or in the near future, will have vacancies. As vacancies occur, the Mayor's Appointments Advisory Committee will review all applicants and will make their recommendations to the Mayor.  In the normal course of business, the Advisory Committee meets in the Spring to consider appointments for terms that begin in April.  For most boards and commissions, Duluth residency is required.

To be considered to serve on any of the boards or commissions listed below, or for any other board or commission, submit an application.  Applications are kept on file for two years.


There are current and/or future openings on the following boards and commissions:

BUILDING APPEAL BOARD - This board hears appeals from decisions of the Building Official's interpretation of the State Building and Duluth Housing codes, and the handling of appeals pertaining to the Fire Chief's interpretation of the Fire Code.  Seeking general citizenry and a representative of a building trade union.

COMMISSION ON DISABILITIES - Assesses the needs of disabled persons regarding matters such as employment, housing, transportation, accessibility and equal rights and advises the city of such assessments.

DULUTH HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION - Promotes cultural diversity in Duluth; promotes the elimination of hate, prejudice and discrimination against persons or groups based on race, gender, religion or other status of the person or group.

DULUTH TRANSIT AUTHORITY - Administers the operation of the City of Duluth's public transit system.  Seeking applicants living in Council District 5.

INDIGENOUS COMMISSION - Ensures that the views of the Indigenous Community are incorporated in the decision making, future planning, and stewardship of the city of Duluth.

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION - Assists the Administration by making recommendations on issues that are pertinent to the development and/or enhancement of existing or future recreational needs of this community; and to further act as a liaison between community needs, the Parks & Recreation Division and the City Council.  Openings include citywide and Council District 1.

PLANNING COMMISSION - Advises the City Council on all planning and development matters including rezonings, issuance of special use permits, and community development policies.  The Commission has final authority in approval of plats, serves as the responsible governmental unit (RGU) and conducts environmental reviews pursuant to Minnesota Statutes Chapter 116D and the applicable state regulations.

SPECIAL BOARD OF REVIEW - Reviews assessment and classification of all property within the city; hears all persons feeling aggrieved by the assessment or classification of property.  Applicants must be a real estate broker.

TREE COMMISSION - Recommends and advises the city administration and the city council on policies, budgetary concerns and technical tree related issues having an impact on boulevard tree placement and replacement, management, maintenance and removal, reforestation, urban forest management and tree preservation.
